What is Roll on Roll off shipping?
The roll-on roll-off is a method of transport in which the vehicles roll
onto the vessel at the loading sea port and roll off at the destination
sea port. Roll-on/roll-off (RORO or ro-ro) ships are vessels designed to
carry wheeled cargo such as automobiles, trucks, semi-trailer trucks, trailers
or railroad cars that are driven on and off the ship on their own wheels
and are safely stowed and secured under the deck. RORO vessels have built-in
ramps which allow the cargo to be efficiently “rolled on” and “rolled off”
the vessel when in the port.
Advantage of Roll on Roll off Shipping:
The biggest advantage of shipping a vehicle by roll on roll off is cost. In average, shipping cost by roll on roll off is half than the container. The other advantage is less terminal handling charges and easy loading on the vessel.
Disadvantage of Roll on Roll off Shipping:
The disadvantage is time consuming, as ship will only leave the loading port when it has enough cargo for the destination port, and ship sometime changes the sailing schedule due to insufficient cargo. Further, there are chances of small damage of automobile like small dents and small scratches.
What shipping method should choose:
If your car is used / second hand, not very expensive, and you are not
in hurry to receive the vehicle, then the “Roll on Roll off” is recommend.
Although it takes more time to reach at destination port, the shipping
cost is cheaper and easy handling of cargo at the destination port.
